Most homes in the United States are heated by a furnace or a boiler. A boiler heats your home by pumping gas into a combustion chamber where it is ignited. Then a heat exchanger transfers the heat and the water inside is heated. They are two types of boilers, gas and electric. Electric boilers are ideal for smaller homes that are not connected to a gas network or a place with low heat and hot water demand. Much like every other mechanical system in your home, boilers break down over time. They do not last forever. Most boilers last about 15 years. If it has been about that long since your last boiler replacement, you are likely in need of a new one.
Signs it’s time for a new boiler
- No Hot Water or Heat: This is the most obvious sign. If your boiler is not providing hot water and heat to your home, it clearly is not working. You will need a new replacement or at least a repair.
- Uneven Heating: This can be an indication that the controls are not working properly. If you cannot get this resolved with a repair, it’s time for a new boiler.
- Frequent Breakdowns: As a boiler unit gets near the end of its life, it will break down much more frequently than in the past. If you notice your boiler is always acting up, purchase a new one.
- Increased Energy Bills: As your boiler ages, it will become increasingly energy inefficient. If your energy bills have been skyrocketing over the past few months, have your boiler inspected and/or replaced.
